YORK residents can turn tourist this weekend and visit a host of top attractions in and around the city for free.

The 23rd York Residents Festival, being held tomorrow and Sunday, will offer free entry to many of York’s attractions, behind-the-scenes access to some of the city’s hidden gems, special events and some restaurant and retail deals.

Residents will need a valid YorkCard or student card to access these offers.

York Minster is among the the attractions taking part in the festival.

Residents already enjoy year-round free admission to the cathedral, but this weekend they can also climb the central tower free of charge as part of the city-wide residents’ celebration.

Another attraction that residents can visit for free this weekend is The York Dungeon, where they can enjoy a 75-minute journey into 2000 years of York’s horrible history.

City Cruises York is offering free cruises to residents along the Ouse.

Out of the city, residents can explore the grounds of Castle Howard, near Malton, for free, but the house itself is closed.

The National Centre for Birds of Prey, at Duncombe Park, Helmsley, is also opening its doors free of charge to York residents.

During the weekend, the Visit York team will be in Parliament Street handing out brochures, balloons and helping residents make the most of the festival.

Joining them will be sponsors First York, who will be encouraging youngsters to play bus driver on one of its fleet.

Sally Greenaway, head of Visit York, said: “We’re delighted to be celebrating 23 years of our Residents’ Festival. With free entry to our world-class attractions and a host of restaurant and shopping offers, this festival is our way of saying a big thank you to York’s residents.

“As well as our world-class attractions, festival programme, superb shopping and gastro scene, it’s the warm and friendly welcome that draws visitors back year after year.”

Pre-booking is required for some of the attractions and tours, and some venues have limited tickets available.
