ONE window wasn’t enough for the Bar Convent when it designed its contribution to York’s Living Advent Calendar.

James Foster, general manager of the convent’s trust, said it wanted its windows to reflect its threefold mission of education, its heritage as Britain’s oldest living convent, and spirituality.

Led by its shop manager Sara Thorpe, the convent designed three windows together to reflect the Christmas story.

Sister Ann Stafford unveiled the results during the convent’s first arts and craft fair which was deliberately timed to coincide with the unveiling on Saturday.

Twenty-four hours later, Jorvik Viking Centre gave a very different viewpoint of the traditional feast.

The Vikings introduced the idea of the Yule log, which in their time was a real log burnt on a fire, but which in modern days has turned into a chocolate log to be eaten.

The Jorvik picture shows a white tree with labels praying for love and peace and the end of winter.

Both windows are among 25 being unveiled - one a day - from December 1 to December 25. The public will then vote to decide the best.
