AN ex-commercial hen has been making the most of her new home after a welfare charity near York rescued her from slaughter.

Hey Hey was one of ten hens re-homed by Chloe Brown and her ten-year-old daughter Savannah at a collection carried out by the British Hen Welfare Trust in Sand Hutton. Chloe, of South Elmsall, West Yorkshire, said: “We decided to re-home ex-battery hens as we love all animals and had plenty of room on our land to accommodate them. The girls have settled down very quickly and Hey Hey has even been seen riding our ponies!” The charity is re-homing hens tomorrow in Sand Hutton. Anyone interested in giving a few hens a second chance is urged to register on their website at www.bhwt.org.uk and then phone 01884 860084. The hens need to be reserved in advance of the re-homing day and, while saving these hens from slaughter comes free of charge, the charity asks for a donation to help cover its costs.
