ONE of York's oldest building services firms is on target to reach a turnover of £24 million this year.
Now the 187-year-old JH Shouksmith and Sons Ltd, whose head office and York divisional centre are based in Osbaldwick, is competing for the Large Business Of The Year title in The Press Business Awards 2008.
The family business, headed up by managing director John Miller, offers a full range of plumbing, heating and specialist contract services. It now also has operating divisions in Bolton, Gloucester and Sheffield.
It also has a trading division in Leeds called Morfitts.
Between them they employ 200 people, and last year turnover was £20.4 million.
Asset and cash rich, the firm has maintained its profitability through 70 per cent of its work being repeat business.
The impetus continues through a programme of acquisitions, including Keda Plumbing, in Bolton, which now operates as its north-west division; the opening of a new office and brand new team in Sheffield; rebranding of the Turner and Pritchard Gloucester office as Shouksmiths south-west division; and the investment of £1.4 million in new premises for Morfitts in Leeds.
