A report by the Tyndall Centre for Climate Change Research has found that the methane and CO2 burden produced by gas extraction and burning as a baseload fuel, as this Government wishes to do with fracked gas, will smash the Paris agreement and drive us to a terminal 3C rise.

As Julian Sturdy said the Government see this as a temporary bridge but he was asked what sort of a bridge lasts for 30 years? He had no reply. The problem is we are sitting at a number of feedback points, for example the release of methane from the Arctic tundra and even a small increase in fracked methane, which is 30 times more potent than CO2 as a greenhouse gas, could push us over the cliff edge.

Burning gas for power generation also loses a lot of power at about the 40 per cent mark of loss. This is better than coal but the report states we cannot burn additional fossil fuels.

The gas industry convinced our MPs, who not being engineers find it difficult to answer back, to burn gas. They profit but the young among us will pay a very high price.
