AN ARTIST from York has had her work selected for an exhibition in London for the second year running.

Lesley Birch's abstract painting Follower will be on display at The ING Discerning Eye Exhibition at The Mall Galleries in London.

Part of Lesley's Stories of Land & Earth Series, Follower is also featured in an American book about oil painting techniques using cold wax.

Lesley said: "I've been using cold wax for about four years now and find it suits my purposes for textured, earthy works. It has a lovely matte look.

"The painting is inspired by Seamus Heaney's poem of the same name and relates to me and my father as I followed him everywhere when I was a kid. And, just like Heaney's dad, he began to stumble - both metaphorically and literally. The painting is about generations moving ahead and the younger ones following them, though there are different paths one can take. My paintings, though landscape-based, very often contain a personal, narrative element."

Lesley is also currently showing work in Silson Contemporary, Harrogate, and The Strathearn Gallery, Crieff.

The Discerning Eye Exhibition is open to the public from Thursday, November 16, until Sunday, November 26, between 10am and 5pm daily, and admission is free.
