ANYONE who regularly drives into York will need no introduction to this house. With its unusual shade of duck egg green, imposing bay window, and elegant front door flanked by Doric pillars, how often have you sat at the lights wondering what it might be like inside?

Well you don’t need to any more because part of this Georgian mansion house is now on the market with Churchills and our guess is when you book a viewing you won’t believe what lies behind that stately façade.

Fulford Park House is one of the last Georgian and Regency residences that lined Fulford’s main street. There was the Old House, a three-storeyed brown-brick building, the White House, a stuccoed two-storeyed building with iron balconies to its first-floor windows, and Fulford House, which was acquired by William Richardson in 1751 and formerly belonged to a member of the Redman family.

Then there is Fulford Park House which firmly belongs to this elite and has been described as a stuccoed villa with a later stable block in a French Gothic style. It certainly stands out from the crowd - and that’s just the exterior.

Once you go inside you will discover equally grand living space with tastefully presented accommodation, beginning with an entrance hall having doors to the cloakroom/WC with window to the side, wash hand basin and low level WC.

Then we come into the superb drawing room with its imposing bay window, the one you’ve always admired from a distance. But that aside, it doesn’t conform to our stereotypical image of a Georgian reception room. Instead this one has been boldly brought into the 21st century with clean lines and strung LED overhead lights. At 21 feet by 16 feet it still has that feeling of 18th century grandeur, though, and with wooden flooring plus a feature wood burning stove, this will make an excellent room to receive guests, just as it was originally intended to do.

Off the drawing room is the kitchen which boasts a full range of fitted units comprising a sink unit with cupboards below, together with base and wall cabinets. There are solid wood work surfaces and a built in electric oven with a gas hob having an extractor above.

Apart from the tiled flooring, another lovely touch, here, is a window to the front with window seat, which just has to be ideal for those who don’t cook, or indeed won’t cook.

Completing the ground floor inventory is a sitting room which with its stairs to the first floor, oak flooring and period cast iron fireplace with open hearth will make a wonderful snug, now that the nights are drawing in as we slide inexorably towards winter.

The staircase take us up to a landing, which is strangely redolent of a Dales longhouse; a style that couldn’t be more different. Opening the first panelled door reveals another astonishing surprise; the superb and enormous master bedroom with two double glazed windows to the front, a dado rail and column radiator. If that isn’t enough for you, just take a look at the adjoining en suite wet room. With a walk in shower cubicle, vanity unit housing wash hand basin, fully tiled walls and under floor heating. Could there be a more perfect place to begin and end the day?

Bedroom two is no slouch either. Again boasting a double glazed window to the front, ceiling cornicing, and column radiator. This is a very elegant room.

The two smaller bedrooms are just as inviting and each offers the option of flexible accommodation. Bedroom three at 12 feet by almost 10 feet will easily take a double bed, while bedroom four seems to us the ideal nursery for a growing family, or perhaps it could become an office for those who work from home.

Another slice of languishing luxury awaits you in the family bathroom with its amazing free standing bath. There is also a vanity unit which houses the wash hand basin, a low level WC, recessed spotlights, extractor fan and chrome towel rail/radiator.

Outside Fulford Park House has a driveway leading to a communal parking area and this gives access to the single garage. As well as an attractive private garden that has been set to lawn with well stocked flower borders containing shrubs and bushes, there is a timber summer house which has been beautifully decked out as a beach hut-come-den. No shed action here gents, this is very much a family space.

Being close to popular local schools and amenities, Churchills, the agents, are recommending an early internal viewing of this fabulous period property. And with good reason because Fulford Park House has to be one of York’s most recognisable homes and regularly has people sat at the lights wondering what it might be like inside.

But take it from us; an inspection is well worth while because you won’t believe what lies behind the stately façade of one of the last Georgian and Regency residences that formerly lined Fulford’s main street.

And when you do take a peek, like us, you will be truly amazed.
