A CHARITY which helps people with mental health problems or disabilities get involved in everything from gardening to gigs has welcomed York's first citizen.

The Hut, in Clarence Gardens, is a "safe space" for people with mental health issues or disabilities, and its members are engaged in everything from gardening projects and organising picnic outings to gigs in the activity room.

It was founded in 2011 by three senior nurses who wanted to improve the quality of life for individuals with mental health issues or disabilities.

Lord Mayor Cllr Barbara Boyce paid a visit on Thursday, September 21, and she praised the "incredibly important" work it does.

The Hut's project manager Emma Harris said they were pleased to welcome the Lord Mayor to their Past, Present and Future event - a chance for people to learn more about what we do and how we work during this exciting new period."

The Hut York has daily activities in the morning and afternoon with group lunches in between. They also have a weekly ‘My Journey’ session which gives individuals the chance to take part in an extra activity and group discussion about their lives or challenges they are facing.
