ALCOHOL bans have been lifted in eight areas of York, after no booze-related problems were reported there over the last three years.

On Monday council executive member Sam Lisle lifted the designated public place orders (DPPOs) at Cleveland Street, Clifton Moor Community Church, Glen Gardens, Poppleton Community Centre, Rawcliffe/Clifton Library, Rawcliffe Lake, Salisbury Terrace and Woodthorpe Green.

The orders gave police and council staff powers to stop people drinking or confiscate alcohol if drinkers were behaving anti-socially.

Reports of booze-related anti-social behaviour (ASB) across the city have fallen by 36 per cent since 2013/14.

Cllr Lisle said: “While we welcome those who want to enjoy our city responsibly, multi-agency operations in areas like those inside the city walls make it clear that the small minority of those who misuse alcohol and act anti-socially may be asked to leave.”

At the same time, Cllr Lisle withdrew several other DPPOs and replaced them with new public space protection orders (PSPOs) covering The Groves, the city centre and railway station, Copmanthorpe, Scarcroft Green, Strensall and Towthorpe, and the War Memorial Gardens on Leeman Road.
