FURTHER to the letter from Kenneth Bowker, Swimming Saga (June 30), the second paragraph should read another champion.

At the 1960 Olympics in Rome, Britain won two gold medals, one of which was awarded to Anita Lonsbrough (facts verified by the Central Library Reference Room).

Anita was coached by Mrs Dale, whose husband was resident manager at Yearsley Bridge baths and she taught swimming, obviously to a high standard.

In those days, the pool was still part of the leisure facilities provided by Rowntrees. Anita's grandparents lived in Hambleton Terrace.
