THE Red Arrows are returning to York to play a leading role in next month's Yorkshire Air Show.

The display team and their nine Hawk aircraft will put on a display of dramatic manoeuvres, including loops, rolls, opposition passes and tumbles.

Their appearance will thrill showgoers, some of whom were disappointed last year when organisers were unable to book the Arrows despite them being a big hit in previous years.

Event director Ken Cothliff said today that the Red Arrows in flight were a "truly breathtaking spectacle," adding: "The speed, grace and accuracy of the formations are second to none."

He said the Arrows would appear on the first day of the two-day event at Elvington Airfield, which takes place on Saturday, August 18, and Sunday, August 19. Crowds will be entertained on the Sunday by the Blades -an aerobatic team made up of ex-Red Arrows pilots.

Gates open at 8.30am on both days, with the main air display starting at 1pm.
