CHARLIE Wegelius was the Brit-king of the mountains after a superb stage nine of the Tour de France.
Wegelius finished the 159-kilometre stage from Val d'Isere to Briancon in 41st place, which bettered his previous stage best of 49th last Saturday. The stage included three major climbs and former York rider Wegelius, the team Liquigas climb specialist, rose to the occasion to finish just under seven minutes adrift of the winner Mauricio Soler, of Colombia. Denmark's Michael Rasmussen was fifth to extend his lead in the yellow jersey to two minutes 35 seconds. Wegelius is in 75th position overall.
