YOU’LL be having déjà vu, thanks to this picture of Bell Cottage, because it appeared a couple of weeks ago on the cover of our Property Press.

Tantalisingly, there was very little information to accompany the image and that got us thinking; a pretty double fronted detached cottage in highly desirable Bishopthorpe for less than £400,000 - how come?

Well the answer is simple. This quaint property needs some work and there is a fair degree of modernising to do. But that makes it a blank canvas and think how fantastic it will look when finished.

Surprisingly, for a cottage, the accommodation is rather spacious and there is also a private courtyard garden and garage.

The house dates back to the 18th century and retains many period features. Originally four bedrooms it was reconfigured by the current owners and now comprises a sitting room with inglenook fireplace and brick surround. There is a family room leading to the study and an inner hall with rear entrance door and cloakroom/WC off, plus dining kitchen with pantry.

On the first floor the landing boasts an arched window to the rear, an original fine balustrade and a return staircase. The master bedroom has a dressing room and bathroom, while a further double bedroom is found to the front elevation with a modern shower room. Lastly there is a really cute third bedroom with sloping ceilings which would make a lovely nursery or child’s bedroom.

Outside, the property is approached via a driveway which leads to the block paved area providing off street parking and doubling up as a front seating area. This leads to the garage with double doors and store. There is also a store adjacent to the house and a path to the side of the cottage leading to the courtyard and a further store.

So forget Homes Under The Hammer. If you are looking for a bargain to do up in an enviable location, here’s one that’s right on your doorstep.
