PEOPLE in the East Riding are being urged to take the "Tidy Pledge" and help keep their county free of litter and flytipping.

The area's council has launched the pledge. Some 200 people signed up at the Driffield Show in July, and now more people are being urged to get involved.

Last year East Riding of Yorkshire Council spent £3.1million cleaning up litter and waste, and another £350,000 cleaning up after fly-tippers.

The pledge includes promising never to drop litter, to take litter home if there isn’t a bin nearby, to take bulky waste to household waste recycling sites, and to always make sure people hired to take waste away have the right permits.

The council's Symon Fraser said: “Litter and fly-tipping is an increasing problem in our area so we are really encouraging residents to only use licensed waste carriers to handle their waste.

“We all want to make the East Riding a cleaner place and stamping out fly-tipping is vital to this aim.”

People who signs the pledge will have a chance of winning a £25 Love2shop high street voucher.

To sign up either email your name, address and telephone number to streetscene.enforcement@eastriding.gov.uk with ‘I sign the Tidy Pledge’ in the subject box; or fill in the coupon in the September edition of Your East Riding magazine. The deadline is Saturday, September 30.
