THIS LOVINGLY restored look at Brian Eno’s first four Seventies' albums after leaving Roxy Music is as entertaining as thought provoking. Delve inside to find not only ambient or glam, but singles, punk and world music.
Eno’s status as a non-musician, and his unapologetically intellectual approach, makes much of his output over the decades a musical vol-au vent for the self-appointed cognoscenti.
In these reissues, Eno’s startling lyrics and ideas are fleshed out with a who’s who of guest musicians, making it an accessible treat. Here Come The Warm Jets, the best known, is a real pandora’s box of tricks, finding Eno influenced by the deadpan singing of Syd Barrett.
Taking Tiger Mountain has its moments, but is the most dated. Before And After Science is a very close relative of Bowie’s Low, with the first side given over to songs before instrumentals drift over side two. Another Green World is the most rewarding, a brilliant blend of intellectual, tuneful and musical.
