This is the scene today in a usually quiet York street after a car smashed into a house and burst into flames.

One man has been arrested and four people were taken to hospital this morning (Sunday, September 3) after the white Volkswagen Golf R crashed into the living room of the house in Morehall Close in Rawcliffe, York, at 1.30am and caught fire.

Two people who were in the house at the time managed to get out, but a man who was in the living room suffered severe leg injuries, which are not said to be life threatening.

He was taken to hospital as were three people who were in the car. They suffered head injuries.

North Yorkshire Police today confirmed that one man had been arrested in connection with the incident.

A spokesman for North Yorkshire Police said: "A man in his 20s, believed to be the driver of the car, has been arrested in connection with the incident.

"He sustained minor injuries in the collision and was taken to hospital. The two other people were in the car at the time also received medical attention."

The car, a white Volkswagen Golf R, is being recovered from the living room area of the house following a structural assessment of the property.

Fire crews from AcombHuntington, York and Tadcaster tackled the blaze.

Four firefighters used breathing apparatus to protect themselves. They also used two hose reels and had to set up their own lighting and use a thermal camera to make sure they extinguished all the flames.

Police are appealing for witnesses and anyone who saw the car in the moments leading up to the collision as it travelled along Longwood Road/Rivelin Way, or elsewhere in the area.
