POVERTY is still with us, even in an apparently thriving city such as York.
Such are the findings of a new study by the Joseph Rowntree Foundation, on which we report today.
According to the survey, a quarter of the population in York is on the breadline and one in ten households is very poor. This will come as a shock to some people, although it will not be news to anyone struggling to get by on severely limited means.
Shockingly, the situation appears to be getting worse. This is surely a poor reflection on ten years of New Labour, which pledged to iron out such social inequalities.
