WHEN Scarborough Bridge first opened in 1845, pedestrians using it to cross the River Ouse had to follow a footpath that ran between two railway lines.
Health and safety has improved since then. But the footbridge at one side of the bridge is still pitifully inadequate. It is narrow; cut off when the river floods; and because it can only be accessed by steps, out-of bounds to anyone in a wheelchair.
It is long overdue an upgrade. So we hope the council presses ahead with its proposed new £4.8 million foot/cycle bridge.
