CITY of York Athletics Club star Richard Buck claimed fifth place in the final of the 400metres of the European Under-23 Championships in Debrecen, Hungary, after running a personal best.

The Pickering-based runner shaved a hundredth of a second off the time he clocked in his opening heat as he ran 46.15 seconds, with the gold going to Russia's Denis Alekseyev in 45.69.

Meanwhile Buck was the only 400m specialist to line up for Great Britain in the 4x400m relay heats on Saturday.

Teaming up with hurdler David Greene and 800m finalists Richard Hill and Darren St Clair, Buck helped his team reach the final by finishing fourth in their heat in 3.08.26.

However, the squad could only manage to finish fifth in last night's final.

Meanwhile, Leeds Metropolitan University student Buck has been selected in the 18-strong British Universities Sports Association squad to represent Great Britain at the World University Games in Bangkok between August 8 and 18.
