WITH reference to York becoming a booming town economically (Keep what's best, The Press, July 10), one can't help but reflect that with every success story there is always a downside.

Transformation to an affluent society brings not only high property prices and traffic problems, as highlighted in your article, but a general increase in lawlessness and disorder to contend with.

There has to be a basic infrastructure in place to accommodate progress, which at the present time is sadly lacking. We need a police, health and fire services that are able to meet demand.

Unfortunately, all that glistens is not gold. Unless City of York Council has long term measures to meet this "Klondike" apparition that we are to inherit, greed will outstrip common sense.
