YORK-BASED golfers Ian Gibb, Marc Crosbie, Brian Eccles and Richard Cronwright will be backed by Colin Montgomerie as they tackle the Macmillan Cancer Support's Longest Day challenge.

The gang of four swing into a marathon of action on Friday at Forest of Galtres GC where they aim to raise more than £3,000 in sponsorship for the cancer care charity by playing four rounds in one day.

Anyone wishing to back the attempt can donate at www.justgiving.com/teamgaltres and the top three teams in the UK will qualify to compete for the Longest Golf Day Challenge 20078 Trophy at the De Vere Slaley Hall, near Hexham.

  • A TOTAL of 100 players competed in the Kilnwick Percy GC Invitation Day, with competitors from as far afield as Derby, Lincolnshire and Scotland.

The betterball stableford event was won by Neil Atkinson and Robin Kettlestring with 43 points.

The Invitation Day is the first part of a four-week major competition stretch which includes tomorrow's club championship, the Captain's Day on July 21, and the Junior Open on July 28.

  • DESPITE a singles triumph from Harrogate GC's John Parry, England trailed in last place in the European Men's Team Championship ceding their crown in Ayrshire. England went down 4-3 to Ireland in the semis and then lost by the same score to Scotland in the third and fourth place play-off.
  • Robin Angland won the Forest Park GC championship over 36 holes with two rounds of 76. His 152 total was five shots ahead of Ken Tuite.
  • DOT Elliott won Fulford GC's Melville Trophy with a nett 79 on count-back from Linda Edmondson.
