Fishergate Primary School pupils enjoyed a 45-minute open top bus ride to celebrate their sporting success.

Teachers organised the gesture after the school won both the all-girls and the main tag rugby tournaments organised by York City Knights. The boys beat more than 70 schools while the girls topped 30 teams.

As reported in a previous edition of Park Life - no other school has achieved this feat in the same year.

Also on board were the school's hockey and football teams who also excelled. The football side won their league, advancing to the York Primary Schools Champions League finals, where they finished third.

Bus company Pullman lent the school an open top bus and the kids travelled around York.

School secretary Kathie Whitehead said: "The kids toured the city - and then back.

"We had the whole school, staff members, friends and family line the streets as they left. They passed the University, the city walls and then back to Fishergate. The children thought it was absolutely the best thing."

As onlookers waved back to the singing sports kids, Whitehead added: "I'm sure the passers-by thought the idea was fantastic. York City Knights mascot Norris the Knight apparently couldn't believe how many songs the kids knew.

"I would like to think if the children perform amazing again next year then we could have a nice tradition."
