CHILDREN from a York primary school brought the West End to the city when they staged Matilda the Musical.

The efforts and creative talents of Year 6 pupils at Heworth CE Primary were hailed "outstandingly good" by their music teacher Molly Newton.

She said they performed the reduced schools' version, Matilda the Musical in 20 minutes - give or take.

The young cast sang hit songs from the show, learnt "extremely challenging lyrics in parts and some really complicated long scripts", Molly added.

"We made all our own props, apart from a hat stand we borrowed, and painted our own backdrop. It was an amazing achievement for 20 children."

The show was staged in Heworth Methodist Church for proud families and friends.

And the children's hard work is being rewarded this week with a special trip to London to see the show on the big stage.
