A first-time driver's illegal journey ended with him crashing into another car and fleeing on foot, York Magistrates Court heard.
Benjamin Thomas Barker, 29, told the court: "I was trying something new. It (the accident) happened before I could do anything about it. I wasn't thinking straight."
Simon Ostler, prosecuting, said Barker had never had a licence and had never driven before he got behind the wheel of a silver Astra on November 30.
He crashed into a BMW at the roundabout of Foxwood Lane and Askham Lane, Acomb, damaging its nearside wing and passenger door.
The Astra stopped nearby, a woman passenger got out and walked off. Then Barker got out and walked off towards the A1237.
Barker, of Brecksfield, Skelton, pleaded guilty to failure to stop, failure to report an accident and driving without insurance.
He was fined £340 and ordered to pay a £30 statutory surcharge and £85 prosecution costs.
He was also given nine penalty points which will be kept on his driving record at DVLA and will appear on a licence if Barker applies for one.
Mr Ostler said no-one was injured in the crash.
