TWO York residents have told a jury of noises they heard at about the time three people were allegedly trying to kill a man near their homes.

Laura Michelle Bennett alleged: "I heard what I believe was a woman's startled screech or a scream." She thought it was between 10.35pm and 10.40pm on June 12 last year.

John David Burn alleged he was woken from a doze between 10pm and 10.30pm the same day by a vehicle's engine ticking over in the wooded area behind their homes in Burnholme Drive, Tang Hall.

He heard it for about 20 minutes and he also heard voices talking at a normal level and the phrase "just leave it" or "just leave him".

Earlier, the jury at Leeds Crown Court saw CCTV footage the prosecution say is alleged murder bid victim Matthew Carney leaving the Castle Howard Ox, Townend Street, The Groves, with Paul Michael Rishworth, 31, Scott Hurst, 29, and his partner Keeley, 23, in a car at 10.29pm.

The prosecution claim that the others took Mr Carney to a path behind Burnholme Drive, where he was found at about 11pm so badly injured that he was in intensive care for weeks afterwards.

Rishworth, of no fixed address, and the Hursts, of James Street Caravan Site, York, all deny attempted murder.

The jury have also seen telephone records and photographic evidence which the prosecution say shows the movements of the defendants that night.

The prosecution claim the three switched their phones off before they left the pub and didn't switch them on until after the time of the alleged attack so that they couldn't been traced.

Police believe that photos taken by automatic number plate recognition cameras in the city show they went to Heworth roundabout and at 10.45pm were heading along Murton Way towards Murton to the east of the city and at 11.09pm arrived at the north end of New Lane before going via Elmfield Avenue towards Bell Farm Avenue and turning into Huntington Road.

The trial continues.
