AN HISTORIC York pub is back on the market, after a previous sale fell through.

The Jubilee in Balfour Street was sold subject to contract in February by Wakefield-based Tri-Core Developments, and was intended to be reopened and run as a pub.

However, the sale collapsed, and following a change of estate agency, the pub is back on the market again, with a minimum guide price of £230,000.

A spokesman for Fleurlets, now responsible for the sale of the pub, said the company had been instructed this week to organise the sale.

They said the agency would be “offering it for sale as is”, and “would entertain whatever interest comes through to us”.

Last year, locals teamed up with pub campaigners from the Campaign for Real Ale (CAMRA), and the pub was listed as an Asset of Community Value (ACV), before being put back on the market.

It was bought by Wakefield-based company Tri-Core from Enterprise Inns last summer.

As an ACV, locals usually have the option to buy the pub, but the council and vendors took legal advice which suggested the sale was valid as it had been agreed before the listing.

The Friends of The Jubilee opposed a move by Tri-Core to turn the pub into housing, as it would have left the Leeman Road area with just one remaining pub, The Leeman Rose.

The Jubilee is no longer licensed, but is offered by the estate agency as a long leasehold, “for a term of 999 years at a peppercorn rent and with no rent reviews”.

Stuart Niven is a local resident and musician who said he wants to see the pub reopen, and perhaps offer its services as a rehearsal room for local bands.

He said: “The Jubilee would be a great venue for myself and many other bands out there who need accommodation to rehearse.

“There is nothing for the community in that area and it would be an ideal opportunity for the pub and me [if it were] to reopen.”
