A TERRIER which was injured after being used in badger baiting is just one of the animals seen by a York vet which is raising funds to be able to provide urgent treatment.

The Minster Veterinary Practice is raising money for its Stray Fund to help them cover the £10,000 annual cost of treating sick and injured animals.

No animal is ever turned away and all receive treatment and care until they are reunited with their owners, found new homes or can be returned to the wild.

Recent cases have seen hedgehogs, rabbits and dogs brought to the surgery in urgent need of treatment.

One of the worst cases seen by Minster Vets involved a terrier suffering from horrific facial and neck wounds after being used in badger baiting. The dog needed urgent surgery but survived and was eventually rehomed.

Minster Vets is offering free claw clippings for dogs, cats, rabbits and other small furries to help them hit their fundraising target.

The claw clipping clinics will run throughout May at six of their practices - the Salisbury Road hospital, Haxby, Copmanthorpe, Willow Grove, Crockey Hill and Tower Court.

Senior vet nurse Tracey Pulleyn said: “We see and treat a huge number of stray animals each year, so we are always looking for ways to raise money.

“Keeping your pets’ nails trim is really important as it can help to prevent further health problems including mobility issues and ingrown nails in cats. Nail clippings are a key part of the role we provide as nurses, so we thought it would be a great way to promote the role of veterinary nurses as well as raising money for our stray fund.”

Claw clippings usually cost £12.70. Clients will be asked to provide a donation to the fund.

The clinics will also be supporting National Veterinary Awareness Month, which promotes the role of veterinary nurses.
