FIREFIGHTERS tackled three fires in one evening in North Yorkshire, which are all believed to have been started by young people.

Three fire engines and an aerial ladder platform were sent to The Oval in Harrogate at about 6.15pm yesterday to put out a fire in an old disused three-storey building.

North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service said rubbish had been set alight in the building and three youths were escorted from the property by fire crews and given a precautionary check by paramedics.

A spokesperson for the fire service said: "We believe that it was deliberately caused by some young people."

In same evening, at 5.20pm, a fire crew was called to a fire in a skate park in Valley Gardens, Harrogate.

It is believed this was caused by youths setting light to rubbish, but it was out when the crew arrived, the fire service said.

At about 7.40pm, crews were also called to a fire in the stairwell of a derelict property in Swineherd Lane, Kirkbymoorside, near Pickering.

The fire service said this is believed to have been started by children as well.
