A NEWLY opened coffee shop in York has used its first day’s trading to raise £1,600 for St Leonard’s Hospice.

The Curious Coffee Company opened in Haxby on Saturday, and on the day asked customers to make a donation to the hospice instead of paying for their coffees.

Owner Eddie Copley-Farnell put on the fundraiser in memory of his step-grandfather Trevor Copley, who was a founding member of the hospice and served as chairman for its first three years, helping to raise millions of pounds.

Eddie, who already owns the Curious Table coffee shop in Easingwold, said: “It was great, we had a queue from around 8.45am all the way through the day.

“The people of Haxby gave us a great welcome and some of my customers came through from Easingwold to see how we were doing.”

Eddie, who grew up in York and went to Joseph Rowntree School, added: “There’s just a brilliant community feel in Haxby, and it’s nice to be part of it.”
