THE bodies may be ageing, but the spirit remains strong for York City Rowing Club’s “four men in a boat”.
Stuart Gill, 85, Dick Gradley, 85, Philip Stubley, 77, and John Sparrow, a mere stripling of 70, have clocked up 317 years between them.
But they see that as no reason to ship oars. They celebrated recent birthdays by doing what they love best – sculling on the River Ouse.
John says the exercise keeps them young. He recently joined a gym, and physiological tests revealed he had the heart of a 57-year-old, he told The Press.
Perhaps that should be the heart of a 57-year-old lion. These four are oarsome.
