EVENTS for all the family have been announced by Selby Town Council.

Following the announcement that the town's very first arts festival will take place this summer, further details of local events have been released this week.

A Farmers and Craft Market will be held on the third Saturday of every month in the Market Place between 9am and 2pm, and is already growing in popularity.

The free Family Fun Day at will be held across five venues on Sunday, June 18, with Scott Road Community Centre hosting rides and slides, donkeys and a dog show, charity stalls, and music from the Abbey Belles choir from noon.

There will also be a Town Hall Tea Dance from 1.30pm to 4pm, a concert featuring seven live bands at the recreation ground from 12.30pm to 8.30pm, brass and silver bands playing in the bandstand at Selby Park between 1pm and 4.30pm and a Vintage Motorcycle and Car Rally in Portholme Drive between 10am and 2pm.

This year's Food & Drink Festival will be held in Market Place, Finkle Street and Gotch’s Square, outside the Griffin Pub, between 9.30am and 5pm, with more than 48 stalls expected, along with buskers and demonstrations from a celebrity chef on Saturday, July 29.

The Beer Festival will be held between 4pm and 11pm on Saturday, August 5. Entry costs £8, including a free pint glass and programme, drink and performances by live bands from 6.30pm, with 20 Yorkshire beers from Brown Cow Brewery and five ciders from Little Badger Company.

The free bonfire and firework display runs on Saturday, November 4 at the community centre field from 6pm, and last year saw more than 4,000 people visit, with a similar number expected this year, and the Christmas Market and lights switch on event is planned for Saturday, December 2.

Karen Mann, clerk for Selby Town Council, said: "The Town Council are excited about the 2017 events which give local residents and visitors to Selby lots of good reasons to come into town throughout the year.

"The first event is this year’s Family Fun Day which will be a fabulous day for young and old people with lots of entertainment on offer for all, Sunday, June 18, is definitely a date for everyone’s diary."

Steve Shaw-Wright, town mayor, said: "Selby town is the place to be this year with so many events and activities for suit most tastes, from brass band concerts, classic motor bikes, beer and food festivals and the anticipated first ever Selby Arts Festival. So to blow away the blues head to Selby there's bound to be something going on."
