ARSONISTS started a fire in the old Burnholme Community College premises in Bad Bargain Lane, York, on Tuesday.
The fire started at 5.23pm on the second floor of one of the derelict buildings.
A crew from York fire station attended, as did police. North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service said paper had been set alight, but the fire was out and the incident dealt with by 6.25pm.
One local resident has told The Press there had been some trouble at the site over the weekend, with windows being smashed.
Earlier this month, demolition of the former school began.
North Yorkshire Police said on Wednesday that they had been called to the site at 5.40pm. They are treating the incident as arson, and ask anyone with information to phone 101, quoting reference 12170030253.
