ROOSTING boxes created by students are to be placed in a York wood to help a local group identify and monitor the bat population at the site.

Students from York High School created 20 bat boxes after the school was approached by Friends of Beech Grove and Fishponds Wood in Acomb.

Two species of bat - pipistrelle and long eared - have been identified in the woods.

Janet Conde, secretary of the Friends, said: “The students were pleased to support the initiative and they will be invited to observe the boxes being placed in position. The East Yorkshire Bat Association has agreed to support us in monitoring the use of the boxes.”
