A HEARTBROKEN mum who shared her emotional story with thousands of people online has spoken of the ordeal after her daughter died.

More than 6,500 people have followed Evlyn’s Story on Facebook since Charlotte Szakacs revealed her daughter would be born with health problems.

Doctors broke the devastating news to Mrs Szakacs, 21, and her 28-year-old husband, Attila, during the mum’s 20-week scan.

The couple, from New Earswick, were told the baby had a problem with her heart known as a Hypoplastic aorta, a birth defect affecting blood flow, and an MRI scan revealed her brain was small and underdeveloped.

The diagnosis was a result of the parents having balanced translocation chromosomes and they were asked if they wanted to terminate the pregnancy.

They declined, and Evlyn was born at Leeds General Infirmary on December 13 weighing 5lb 5oz.

Mrs Szakacs said: “We managed to get a picture when she was born but she was taken straight away to the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU).

“We waited seven hours to see her for the first time and waited three days for our first amazing cuddle.”

Further scans revealed more complications in her lungs, including missing and narrow airways, making it hard for Evlyn to breathe.

She was moved to Martin House Hospice, near Wetherby, and died on January 10.

“The last few months have been hard,” said Mrs Szakacs.

“We have been in another world and none of it seems real.

“It’s quite draining and lonely as well.”

Evlyn’s story has gained thousands of followers and offered some solace to Mrs Szakacs after she was inundated with messages of support by followers.

She added: “I did it for support and I wanted people to know about what was happening.

“When I knew Evlyn had a heart problem I followed other stories and realised I wanted to tell people about my own.”

Mrs Szakacs is determined to keep memories of Evlyn alive and plans to raise awareness of her conditions over the coming weeks, and the family recently took part in a professional photo shoot to help them remember Evlyn.
