A SHUTTLE bus that ran between two hospitals on the Yorkshire coast has been cancelled because of lack of custom.

A trial of the Bridlington to Scarborough Hospital shuttle bus will come to an end this month.

East Riding of Yorkshire Council stepped in to trial a daily shuttle bus between the two hospital sites in July 2016 after local health services said they could no longer fund the service.

But despite an initial 12-week trial being extended to six months, the council says shuttle bus has not attracted enough paying passengers to support itself.

The bus cost £5 for a return journey between the two hospitals. It has been attracting around 140 passengers per week but would need to attract around 350 to be sustainable, the council said.

The extension of the trial period was helped by money from health service bodies and Bridlington Town Council, but after talks organisers say it has not been possible to get enough funding to keep subsidising it so the trial will end on January 29.
