THE Way We Were article 80 years ago featured something probably not noticed on November 17.
The York ring road was progressing with the Kingsway North section completed and Kingsway West under construction.
My grandfather moved in 1936 into one of the houses on the even number side. The left side was a golf course.
Then along came the Second World War and building stopped.
Poles were erected to stop aircraft invading and the Home Guard patrolled protecting the railway.
After the war numerous prefab houses were built so the ring road plan was never finished.
In the 1960s, the prefabs were replaced with the Windsor Garth estate.
Imagine if the 1930s dream had become a reality - vehicles circulating York on concrete slabs. And we think the A1237 causes us problems.
