I AM a bellringer in Sydney, Australia.

The news has reached us here about the silencing of the York Minster bells.

It is unbelievable that it has been found necessary to silence the bells.

Good sense alone should prevail and allow the ban to be lifted immediately.

Whatever problems exist between the ringers and the church authorities can be resolved without any interruption to the ringing.

I made an attempt to complete the online petition but it required a UK postcode.

The church authorities should know that there is a great fellowship of bellringing and that all bellringers will be saddened by the situation in York.

It is the tradition of bellringers to welcome visitors from other churches whether Anglican or not.
