NORTH Yorkshire’s Paralympic hero Laurence Whiteley has paid a visit to a York school.
Northallerton rower Laurence, who won gold in the trunk-arms mixed double scull at the 2016 Summer Paralympics in Rio, gave a talk to pupils at Clifton Green Primary School and brought along his medal to show them.
Laurence had an aggressive form of bone cancer which affected his right leg.
John Hattam, community outreach worker at Clifton Green Primary School, said: “Two of our key priorities at Clifton Green are to raise aspirations and enrich childhood.
“Having Laurence in school ticked all those boxes because he has overcome adversity and battled against the odds.
“Something as simple as walking to him is quite difficult so having him in school to talk about winning a gold medal was really inspirational, for both children and staff.”
