THREE possible locations have been identified for a“state-of-the-art “new mental health hospital for York, with NHS bosses asking for the public’s help to choose the final site.
The three locations in contention are the existing Bootham Park Hospital site, a site near Clifton Park Hospital off Shipton Road, and the former Vickers and Bio-Rad factory site in Haxby Road.
Over the next 12 weeks, a consultation is due to be held over the sites as well as the proposed number of beds.
A spokesperson for Tees, Esk and Wear Valleys NHS Foundation Trust (TEWV) said: “Further work is required to fully assess the suitability of these sites and feedback from the consultation will form part of the final appraisal of sites that meet the required criteria.
“People are also being asked to give their views on proposals that the new hospital will have four 15 bed wards with single, en-suite bedrooms.
“There will be two adult, single sex wards and two wards for older people (one for people with dementia and one for people with mental health problems such as psychosis, severe depression or anxiety). Each ward will have separate male and female bedroom and day areas.”
A new hospital is needed following the closure of Bootham Park Hospital due to safety concerns raised by the Care Quality Commission a year ago.
The plans aim to bring adult and older people’s assessment and treatment beds together in one site as they are currently being run in a number of locations in York and Se.
Eight of the eleven sites originally identified have already been discounted. The trust has written off The Retreat off Heslington Road, Millfield Lane in Poppleton, Moorside in Monks cross, Fulford and Naburn, Earswick in Huntington, Boroughbridge Road in Poppleton, Lowfield in Acomb and Brook Nook in Osbaldwick.
The sites have been assessed on criteria including availability, accessibility, cost and the potential for expansion in the future.
