THE former head teacher of a junior school in York and his three children saddled up and used their pedal power to raise more than £4,500 for charity.

Trevor Mulryne, the former head of St Olave’s School, York, accompanied by Stephen, Paul, and Ann, completed the Sea to Sea cycle challenge over three days from Workington in Cumbria to Tynemouth in Tyne and Wear, a distance of 140 miles, in aid of Prostate Cancer UK.

Last July Trevor, of Beaverdyke, Clifton, was diagnosed with prostate cancer and has since undergone radio and hormone therapy at St James’ Hospital in Leeds.

He says recent results have shown great success following this treatment.

In recognition of the outstanding work being carried out by Professor Norman Maitland at the University of York, and in other centres throughout the world, Trevor decided to seek sponsorship for the coast to coast ride.

Trevor said: “It was very hard. We were lucky we had quite good weather. The Lakeland fells are really tough to get up on the bike, but we all managed it.

“I’ve never done anything like this before. I’ve been thinking of a challenge for some time since I retired.

“It seemed when I was diagnosed last July that this was an opportunity to undertake a challenge for a good cause.”

Stephen, who is the head teacher at Terrington Hall School, near York, said: “The old boy has just enjoyed his 70th birthday and my brother and sister wanted to join me in supporting him as far as possible.

“We were expecting a real challenge getting over some fierce climbs in the Lake District but were confident we could do it.”

Sister Ann added: “I never gave second best to my brothers when younger and I was determined not to be left out of the fun this time”.
