A YEARLY display of colourful outfits and an outpouring of grit and determination took place on the River Ouse as Dragon Boat teams battled it out for worthy causes.

The banks of the river were packed for a day of drum-beating and paddle-waving as passionate crews raced against each other over a short stretch of water to take home the top prize.

Some teams pulled on multi-coloured Mohawk wigs to stand out from the crowds, while others put on their war paint for one of the city’s fun days.

Four teams from across the region raced each other between Scarborough Bridge and Lendal Bridge for the 14th consecutive year as 20 people packed into a boat to race for victory.

The drum-beating and team spirit makes the event stand out as one of the city’s most memorable days for those who take part.

The main winner was a team from the Fourth Battalion, the Yorkshire Regiment, while Escrick Playing Field Association were crowned the Best Dressed Team.

Eileen Davis, president of organisers York Rotary, said the day had gone well.

She said: “The weather was very kind and it was a wonderful

atmosphere.

“We have raised more than £63,000 with everyone’s sponsorship.

“It was a great day but they are always a bit different because we have different teams, but everyone had lots of fun.”

This year’s charities were the Family Fund York, and The Island York.

The Rotary Club said plans for next year’s race were already foot and more information on the 2017 Dragon Boat Challenge being held on July 9 will be published later this year. Application Packs will be sent out in February next year to the club’s database of interested parties.
