“WHAT’S in a name?” Shakespeare said. What indeed. Canon Lee School is to have a new name, but will it change anything else? Surely what goes on in a school is not dependent on a name.
Canon Lee was rector of Holy Trinity Church for many years. He prepared me for confirmation, conducted the ceremony of my wedding and baptised my first child. As a child, I learned first aid, home nursing and collected rose hips during the war. All these under the auspices of GFS (Girls Friendly Society) in Jacob’s Well.
Between the ages of five and 11, my school was Scarcroft: Victorian, outside loos, no hot water, 50 children in a class, no school dinners, and I can still recite poems I learned and sing the songs too. We girls aged 11 years made a dress for ourselves, all by hand. The boys did woodwork. The building and the name were quite inconsequential to our education.
I remember when Acomb High came into being. The head boasted about the beautiful facilities and the difference it would make to learning. Poppycock.
