NORTH Yorkshire Police have urged anyone with video footage of a far right protest in York to share it with police.

A group of 30 to 40 neo Nazis gathered near the Minster and St Michael le Belfrey church on Saturday afternoon, with a heavy police presence and many tourists and passers by stopping to find out what was happening.

Members of the public reported seeing the protesters performing Nazi salutes, and the group unfurled an anti-refugee banner with a picture of Adolf Hitler on it.

Five people were arrested at the scene, including four of the demonstrators and one member of the public:

  • A 27-year-old York man was released without charge.
  • A 25-year-old man from Weymouth was arrested to prevent a breach of the peace and for failing to supply his details, and later issued with a caution.
  • A 25-year-old man from West Bromwich was arrested on suspicion of racially aggravated public order offence and released on bail.
  • A 31-year-old man from Horley, Surrey was arrested on suspicion of using threatening words or behaviour and released on bail.
  • A 21-year-old man from Swansea was arrested on suspicion of a public order offence and released on bail.

Police said further investigations into the protest would be carried out, and more arrests could take place.
