IN a display of far from loving thy neighbour, Alexander Ogilvy (Letters, May 18) delivered a laughable viewpoint for today’s society.

Yet, it is a stark reminder that such a mindset still exists even within our communities in York. There’s still time for an olive branch to Mr Ogilvy and those who would share his viewpoint.

There is, believe it or not, nothing “so-called” about gay people or in fact the rest of the LGBT+ community.

In that Mr Ogilvy presumes Pride to be a grotesque cacophony, he may wish to acknowledge the overbearing fear that many have within the LGBT+ community in terms of rejection and, of course, persecution within the outer reaches of the world. Such an event aims to remember this - and crucially so.

Thankfully, in Great Britain we’re in a greater echelon of success to prevent such horrendous incidents but we shouldn’t comply to complacency.

I therefore finish with this: whatever your generation, it is always important to love thy neighbour. Rejecting parts of our community has never been a way to ameliorate our community; it would be great, pitiful sin to do so.
