ANOTHER of the York bars hit by December's flooding has re-opened, so it seems timely to catch up how all those affected are doing.

The most familiar victims alongside the Ouse in the city-centre (such as The Lowther, The King’s Arms and Plonkers) were open again within days. But others suffered far more, particularly those near The Foss.

The goodwill across York in the aftermath of the floods was truly heartening, and drinkers wanting to keep that going should perhaps consider frequenting the venues below when you can.

So, here's an update on how they're getting on, and what you can enjoy when you get there.

Dyls on Skeldergate Bridge

It reopened in part yesterday, serving beer, coffee and street food from the riverside terrace.

Work inside the building will begin on Tuesday, ahead of a full grand re-opening, scheduled for June 3.

The Watergate Inn, Walmgate

Work here is going slower than hoped. Landlady Maria Fooks-Taylor had hoped for an Easter re-opening, but there have been a few delays. She now expects the repairs to last another four weeks or so.

During the restoration, the bar will be made slightly smaller and the bench seating, which was badly damaged, will be removed and not replaced. Instead, there will simply be more tables and freestanding chairs.

Masons Arms, Fishergate

Despite efforts, we’ve been unable to find out this week what is happening here. The pub remains closed at the moment.

Red Lion, Merchantgate

It reopened earlier this month, after a three-month closure. Business has been going well since, says landlord Pete Pendlebury. On the bar at the moment are Rudgate Ruby Mild, Moorhouse's White Witch, Hobgoblin, Merrie City Cascadian and Empire Golden Warrior.

The first of this year's Summer Sounds events takes place today, with live music and an outside bar and - weather permitting - a barbecue.

Fossgate Social, Fossgate

his place is fully open again and bigger than before.

In the aftermath of the floods, sister and brother owners Sarah (pictured above) and Mike Lakin found renewed urgency to press on with their long-planned expansion, so there is now a welcoming new upstairs room as well as the familiar ground floor.

Beers available at the moment include Beavertown Smog Rocket, Hell lager by Brass Castle, Camden Pale and Thornbridge Jaipur. The growing canned range includes beers from Magic Rock, Dark Star and Heart & Soul.

Walmgate Ale House

After a ten-week closure, it reopened fully in mid-March, and the refit brought a slightly new look. Beers on the bar in recent days, or waiting to go on, have included: Treboom Sparkle; Great Heck Dave, which is a frequent favourite here; and Little Eagle IPA, one of the ales from the brand new Brew York just over the road.
