MEET cricket prodigy Charlie Elliot who has hit another milestone - by being made captain of the Yorkshire Under-11s team.

The youngster, who plays cricket and rugby union at York Cricket and Rugby Club, has been representing his county with bat and ball for three years.

Now he has been given the ultimate honour. Elliott, who has already scored a 61 this year but is still waiting to record his first ton, will open the batting and deliver his off-spin bowling when the county starts a series of matches tomorrow.

In his short cricketing career, Elliott, of St Olave's School, has also notched up a hat-trick.

Yorkshire's opening game is tomorrow when the county take on Nottinghamshire Schools at Sheffield United Cricket Club.

That match comes just six days after he turned out at Twickenham for York RUFC U11s in the finals of the nationwide Gullivers Tournament when the young Clifton Parkers sampled some silverware (see centre pages).

Elliott is one of a number of York Cricket Club juniors to gain representative honours following the recent round of trials.

Joe Fox, of Cannon Lee School, and Jake Murphy, of All Saints, will represent North Yorkshire Schools at U15 level, while Murphy is also in the Yorkshire squad and has an upcoming North of England trial in prospect.

Other North Yorkshire selections are Andrew Simpson, of Millthorpe School, who has been called up to the U13 squad and St Olave's duo Chris Burn and Hamish Lynde, who have won U12 honours.

Elliott top scored with 14 as York A' maintained their winning start to the York Under 11 Cricket League West Zone season.

Bolton openers James Mackie (26) and Steven Arnold got off to a flying start putting on 31 in four overs but the rest of the batsmen were unable to maintain the momentum as tidy bowling from Ryan Waite (3-1), Cowley (1-2) and Nightingale (1-4) applied the brakes.

Selby chalked up a second successive victory with an impressive batting performance at New Lane against York RI where J Rich (41) and Bowden (21) were the chief run-getters.

In the Central Zone, Osbaldwick narrowly beat Clifton Alliance where A Burton (11 and 3-2) was the star performer with J Rawsthorne (3-2) also having Alliance's batsmen struggling.

Greg Drewery (10 and 4-10) shone as Londesborough Park beat Stamford Bridge by 21 runs in the East Zone. Bridge's Daniel Andrew had figures of 27 and 3-20.

Wilberfoss sneaked a four-run win at Woodhouse Grange and unbeaten Sheriff Hutton Bridge saw off Malton & Old Malton with M Fisher scoring 11 and taking 4-7.

Dunnington also had a home win against Easingwold A' in which Rowson took 3-4 for the winners.
