POCKLINGTON School made a first successful foray into the National Schools Cup Athletics Competition.

The first round was held at Hull and despite fielding a weakened Under-15 side they finished fourth out of 13 teams.

Greg Berry won both the high jump and 200 metres while Jamie Dick finished first in the 1,500 metres.

Eleven of the 14-strong team were a year under age so showed their potential for next season.

Pocklington's junior squad faced a last-minute re-jig the day before the competition with five boys coming into the squad which still managed to finish sixth.

In the Independent Schools girls athletics competition at Huntington Stadium there were individual victories for Lucy Peel and Katie Atkinson.

A total of 22 independent schools from the North of England took part with Pock finishing second in the Under-15 events overall and third in both U12 and U13.

Peel was first in the U12 1,500m and sprinter Atkinson hit the tape first in the U15 100m.

Other good U12 performances came from Emma Adisile (4th, long jump), Lucy Snowden (4th high jump) and the relay team which was third.

Georgia Byas doubled up in the U13 long jump and 100m, finishing third in both events. Team-mates Juiliet May and Laura Reeson finished in fourth in the 800m and 1,500m respectively.

Jess Blake was runner-up in the U15 800m and second places were also achieved by Sarah Megginson (discus) and Katie Peeke-Vout (high jump). Natasha Stageman was third in the javelin and the relay team also came home in third spot.
