This was the scene as 10 people were arrested during a mass brawl in York city centre.

Police are appealing for witnesses to the massive fight, which broke out in Tanner Row, outside Flares nightclub, at about 10.20pm on Sunday.

Trouble erupted after a group of men were thrown out of the club and started fighting with bouncers. Other men then joined in the booze-fuelled brawl.

The area was much busier than on a normal Sunday, with hundreds of people out celebrating the Bank Holiday weekend. Local resident Andrew Clark said he heard police sirens and looked out of his window to see what was happening.

"I heard the police cars and realised something was happening outside," he said. "I saw a commotion outside Flares and it spilled out up Tanner Row.

"It was no small incident. I saw a doorman chasing someone and pinning someone to the ground and the police were pinning someone else to the ground."

He said police were at the scene for at least half an hour and there were about seven or eight marked vans and cars.

"Down the street there were two or three cars and a van, then there was a van a little bit further up and two or three more cars," he said.

"Police blocked off Tanner Row and people who were coming out of Flares and going to walk up past bpm and Nexus but they were being stopped and made to walk all the way round."

He said a large crowd of people gathered in the area.

York Police spokesman Colin Ventress said ten men were arrested and have been released on police bail. No one has yet been charged in connection with the fight.

He said: "Several men were thrown out of Flares nightclub.

"They then started fighting with door staff. They were then joined by other men and there was a large scale disorder, with a large number of men fighting in the street."

He said enquiries into the incident were on going.
