IT has already been voted the best fish and chip shop in York - and now this restaurant has been nominated for a York Community Pride award.

Norah Crowhurst, 75, who cannot walk, has put Wackers, in Gillygate, York, forward for the Service With A Smile award as she was "over the moon" with how the staff accommodated her when she visited the eatery.

Norah, of Regent Street, York, is unable to access many such places in the city on her mobility scooter, but when she went to Wackers with her friend Olive they were treated like queens.

Norah said: "We were really, really over the moon with the way we were treated by the staff at Wackers.

"The restaurant has fantastic facilities for disabled people and the staff bent over backwards to help us - they really couldn't have been nicer."

Norah said she was shown to an area where she could park her scooter next to a table and then helped into one of the chairs.

She said Olive - who uses a rotator to help her walk - was also given assistance to where she was sitting and made to feel comfortable.

Norah said that as well as the food being delicious and great value for money, she was delighted to find there were two disabled toilets on the ground floor.

"We had plenty of room, a spotless table and really friendly service", she said.

"For anyone in a wheelchair or on a scooter, we fully urge you to give Wackers a try - you will not be disappointed!"

Dave Richards and Jill Carney own Wackers. Jill said: "We're all honoured to have been nominated. We feel this is a reflection of how happy and relaxed our customers are when they visit us.

"This year's been filled with achievements for us, not least winning the best fish and chip shop competit-ion.

"Wackers is not just about fish and chips - it's about meeting people and feeling part of the community."

There is still time to nominate unsung heroes from our local community.
