YORK City Rowing Club Juniors excelled at the National Schools' Regatta, gaining a gold and silver at the most prestigious Junior Regatta of the year.

The Junior Under-16 double scull of Tom Korebejko and Chris Wright were victorious in their 20-boat event with some ease.

The performance followed the silver they gained when representing Yorkshire in the Junior Inter-Regional Regatta earlier in the year.

In their Nationals semi-final, Warrington had a length lead at half way with the York duo pulling this back to be almost level at the finish.

In the six-boat final they went out faster in the first half and Warrington only took a three-quarters-of-a-length lead. Half-way down the 2,000 metre course, York pushed on to bring them level with 750m to go.

With the rough water in the last part of the course to contend with, the York boys pulled away to win the Marlow Bowl by over a length.

The J15 double scull of Owen Harrison and James Reeder gained silver in their event.

The crew had trained with great determination following a series of fourth places at major national events. In the last year they just missed out on the medals at the National Championships, National Schools' and Junior Inter-regional Regattas.

This time they went through to the final of their 27-boat event with ease.

In the final, London-basedTideway Scullers took an early lead which they maintained. The York crew were only 1.67 seconds adrift at the finish and clear of Marlow in third place.

The J16 Quad of Harrison, Reeder, Eliot Clark and Rob McKenzie just missed out on their final with fourth place in their semi-final.

YCRC captain Gill Porteous said "Gold and silver is the club's best-ever result in this major junior event, and credit goes to the athletes and their coaching team for their dedication over many months."
